Weekend Makeover favorite Steve Barron shows us a new twist on wall paneling.

Announcer: While brick and stone walls suggest something elegant and proud that few materials can match, the installation is expensive, labor intensive and way beyond the means of most do-it-yourselfers. Fortunately, natural brick and stone aren’t the only options. Fauxpanels.com has created a product that mimics these materials and others while cutting out most of the cost and labor but none of the charm.

Steve Barron: The product is made out of polyurethane. And what’s great about polyurethane is that it could be used or interior or exterior use. Landscapers use it, contractors use it, consumers use it. It’s an all-around product that you can use pretty much anywhere. It won’t fade or crack or split. Sun will not fade it. It’s impact proof and it’s lightweight and easy to use, so installation’s really simple.

Announcer: To install, all you’ll need is construction adhesive, screws, a wood cutting saw, drill and caulk gun. The first step is to take a look at your four-foot panels, because you’ll notice one side has what they call “fingers” and the other has a lip.  If you decide the lip will be on the right, you must repeat this pattern.

Steve Barron: It’s like a jigsaw puzzle.

Announcer:  Once you’ve decided which way the panels will run, simply apply the adhesive on the back, put the panel in place and screw it into the wall.  The fingers from the second panel will slide right into the grooves. Start the second row by placing a panel off center, keeping the seams from lining up.

Steve Barron: The last step you want to do is caulk where the fingers meet, where necessary. Take a rag and just push the caulking into the seams. This caulking will also seal out moisture.

Announcer:  Sealing out the moisture is important because these polyurethane panels can be used inside or out.

On exteriors, home owners often use them to cover concrete foundations or even to cover an entire accent wall. Several businesses have used them to construct their signs.  On the inside, they’re often used on fireplaces and bathrooms or once again for an entire accent wall. And while stone and brick are popular options, they’re hardly the only choices.

Steve Barron: Altogether, we have about 70 different styles to choose from.

Announcer: Among them are 30 different stones, 5 different bricks, 8 different woods and even bamboo and diamond plate. And although natural materials obviously have their place in the world, it’s hard to argue against the convenience and value of faux panels.

Steve Barron: One of the great advantages of using our faux panels is that they’re extremely lightweight and easy to work with. They cut simply, they hold a screw, so really any do it yourselfer could beautify and make over the inside or exterior of their home in a weekend.
